Timothy Byrne  (Class of  ’69)
MCR  Supervisor
NBC Lima WLIO-TV
Lima, Ohio

I graduated from St. John’s in the year of 1969.  Ever since I can remember, I’ve always been interested in the broadcasting field.  I have fond memories at an early age of listening to the radio hour after hour.  I had the stations call signs and formats memorized.  I even had the disk jockeys and their shifts down pat.  I had great interest in becoming a disk jockey of some sort.  After attending broadcasting school, I began job searching.  While awaiting for call backs on jobs, I received a call from a classmate, whose husband worked for a local TV station WLIO (WIMA-TV at the time), stating that the station was installing new RCA cameras in their studio and was in need of camera people.  I interviewed, got the position and some 38 years later, I’m still here, only in a different capacity.  I started as a cameraman and worked my way to a technical director and now am the MCR Supervisor in the engineering department.

Throughout my years at NBC Lima, I’ve had the pleasure of being involved in many shows.  I have sung as well as run audio for Easter Straker’s daily show.  I was also involved with audio for St. Jude telethons plus many other LIVE remotes including the renovation of Lima’s Town Square and the Opening Ceremonies of the Veterans Memorial Civic Center in downtown Lima.  It’s been an exciting career.

I, like Dave Berelsman, was in speech classes as well as drama classes with Mr. Gunder but have a tad too many years on me to have been involved with TV Programming classes.  However, I must say whether speech, drama or TV Programming, it all plays a part in socialization and being in a field that is very much a people related business.   It is so important to prepare yourself the best you can as you approach your career in life.

John has helped contribute to the cause for all of us and a BIG Thank You is certainly in order.  As to all you young people in John’s classes presently, work hard, enjoy and keep your dreams alive.
