Julie Hanser (Class of '89)
Vice President of
Attraction Marketing
Biltmore Estate
Asheville, NC
I'm a 1989 graduate of Delphos St. John and
John Gunder was one of my all-time favorite teachers. After high school
I ventured on to Miami University where I enrolled as a pre-med major
and spent a miserable two years engrossed in organic chemistry and
calculus before seeing the light and changing my major to Mass
Communications. I graduated from Miami in the spring of 1993 armed with
a B.S. in Mass Communications and moved to Cincinnati.
My first job was a media buyer position with a company called
Media That Works which specializes in strategic media planning and
placement for its clients. I spent eight years at Media That Works
(now called Empower Media Marketing) holding various positions in
media planning and buying, account management, and media research
management. At Empower I had the opportunity to work with clients in a
wide variety of business categories including consumer packaged goods,
service industry, retail, travel and tourism and more. Some of the
brands I worked on included: Lenscrafters, Roto-Rooter, Kroger, C&H
Sugar, Jergens, Biore, and Biltmore Estate.
In 2001 I made the decision to leave the agency world and go
"client side." Fortunately, my favorite client - Biltmore Estate in
Asheville, North Carolina - presented me with an opportunity to join
their marketing team, and I jumped at the chance to move to the
mountains of western North Carolina and work for the Biltmore brand.
Biltmore Estate is America's largest home, built by George W.
Vanderbilt in the late 1800's. In addition to 250-room Biltmore House
the 8,000 acre estate also includes vast gardens, the nation's
most-visited winery, a luxurious four-star inn, shops, restaurants and
more. Biltmore Estate welcomes over one million visitors a year. To
learn more about Biltmore Estate visit us online at
biltmore.com.
(Shameless plug...sorry.)
In my position as Director of Marketing for Biltmore Estate I am
responsible for, as we say, "driving the gate." I develop
marketing strategy and oversee implementation of marketing programs that
generate estate visitation and sales of our various products. I also
serve as a marketing consultant for our other businesses including the
Inn on Biltmore Estate, Biltmore Wine Company, and Biltmore
For Your Home licensed home and garden products.
Biltmore is in many ways a dream marketing job. For one, it's a great
product with unlimited potential. Second, I have the good fortune of
working with a phenomenal team of talented, dedicated professionals who
make work both challenging and fun. Third, I have the luxury of access
to my customers every day of the year and can watch them interact with
the product.
On a personal note, I'm also a proud mom to the two greatest kids
in the world - Lily and Quinn.
