Darin Hohman (Class of '97) The storyboards weren’t usually drawn-up until after the shoot, and sometimes we didn’t spend the full 50-minute period “shooting b-roll” as we may have claimed, but this was all part of the creative process. Some of the greatest memories (and lessons) from high school were experienced while sitting in Gunder’s classroom. During those two years, we were able to do so many things beyond the usual classroom projects. We recorded live-to-tape three camera shoots of the choir concert and of a drunk driving demonstration (I think this was the introduction of, and the grand finale for, “Roof Cam”). We cleaned out the old TV room and said goodbye to the last of the Beta machines, while we prepared and painted Room 26. We then moved everything into the newly renovated studio, complete with audio booth and chroma wall. I was put in touch with Bob Ulm (’74) at WDOH, where I began working as a board operator. Looking back on it, signing up for TV-I may have been my biggest career decision. I was interested in media and motion pictures, but never considered it as a serious career option. Now I can’t imagine doing anything else. I attended Bowling Green State
University majoring in Telecommunications (Radio/TV/Film). While at
BGSU, I worked at student-run BG24, WBGU TV27 PBS, and WTVG 13ABC in
Toledo. Following college graduation, I continued to work for 13ABC
(with Kevin Beining ’93 and Dan Smith ’97) as a videographer and
non-linear editor. After working in news for three years I accepted a
producer position with WGTE TV30 Public Broadcasting in Toledo. My main
responsibilities at PBS were to produce documentaries, a weekly public
affairs show, and local segments for a children’s program. I then made
the move into the cable realm as a production coordinator for Toledo’s
WB (Block Communications). In 2005, I moved to Saint Louis and started
the job search all over again. So now I find myself working for a St. Louis production house (www.barlowpro.com) as an Avid editor who gets to run audio on shoots, design graphics and animations, author DVDs, and create web videos. A majority of what Barlow Productions produces is corporate video, but we also do broadcast spots and public service announcements. We provide many services to a broad spectrum of clients. The variety of experiences is what I enjoy the most, never knowing what’s next. I’ve traveled 5,000 miles shooting 10 car races in 9 days (www.onelapofamerica.com), created animations for the MudHens’ JumboTron screen, directed the live broadcast of the bishop’s installation for the Toledo Diocese, and shot endangered plant species for a nature documentary. It is the unique experiences, the wonderful people, and the constant challenges that make it all worth it. Darin's contact email is: |
