Dan Wagner (Class of '93)
My experiences in Mr.
Gunder's class began when I was a Junior in High School. We had a
lot of fun with the projects that we were assigned. I continued
that into my senior year and started working at WDOH radio. Also, I
began working with Coaches Corner and shooting basketball games and
putting them onto the cable system.
I furthered my
broadcasting career at Ashland University were I met new challenges
every day. I learned a lot more than how to edit and shoot video.
I went and tried to learn about engineering and how to color balance
cameras including how to set up different things for remote location
shoots. The most important thing I did while I was in Ashland was I
got a job at WMFD-TV 68 in Mansfield shooting High School Sports.
That led to shooting news stories. Valuable job experience that is
so priceless that I would never forget.
After college I moved to Toledo and
worked at WNWO-TV 24 (NBC). I was fresh out of college and wanted
to learn more. While I was there I saw some pretty neat stuff. I
was able to go and watch John Glenn's return into space. I have
been to Oklahoma City where hundreds of tornadoes ripped the state
apart along with the bombing site memorial. While at WNWO I was
involved with countless stories, doing things I never would have
imagined. One day I think I was in flooding water and the next day
I was in Cleveland at the Indians game talking to Drew Carey.
Now I am in Cleveland at
WOIO/WUAB-TV 19/43 (CBS/UPN). I am currently the Sports
Photographer and that means I get to do the fun stuff. As far as
sports goes I cover the Indians, Cavs, Browns and sometimes the
Buckeyes. I had a pretty sweet gig one season where I actually got
to fly on the Browns Team plane. I ate really well and it was nice
because you were treated like royalty.
Prior to being assigned exclusively to
sports, I was shooting news and I had some pretty cool assignments.
I have been to the World Trade Center site numerous times. I went
to the Vatican to cover Pope John Paul II. I have been to the Super
Bowl, the Grammy Awards, and interviewed so many celebrities I've
lost count. One thing I am glad I did while here in Cleveland
is learn how to run a Satellite truck. That knowledge is invaluable
because it makes myself so much more marketable.
My advice to anyone who takes Mr.
Gunder's class is work hard and learn as much as you can. If you
are interested in doing some type of broadcasting job, talk to
people who do it.
